After finishing the stretch to San Diego last night and arriving at Point Loma Campus, we all got settled, exhausted from our long days of travel and ZONKED out on our beds, preparing for a long day of work. Our mission in coming down here was to help out Church of the Nazarene - Mid City with food distribution and labor. This church is using a 94 year old building that needs/needed lots of repairs, some of which we had the capability of completing while we were there.
I started out the day with some other students and leaders, cleaning and organizing the janitor closet. Which seems like maybe it wasn't top on the priority list, but actually needed a lot of work. After working on this for the first half of the day, we transitioned into preparing food for families and individuals to take with them as a means of survival.
While distributing the food, I was humbled by the process and it hit home the severity of the needs of these people. I take for granted having the privilege of going to the grocery store whenever I need to and buying whatever I need to (within reason of course!). These people have come to the point of desperation and are not choosing to walk through this food distribution line but rather have no choice.
After helping pass out sandwiches and helping with a meal at the Salvation Army in downtown San Diego later that night, the girls in my apartment and I debriefed our day of food distribution at two locations as well as manual labor. It was a long, but important day, and we are changed because of it.
Humbled,
Jennica
