Today was a big day for Oregon high school football. Limits were pushed, teams gave their all, coaches had their last motivational speeches of the year and players stepped on the field, ready to play their hearts out. I had the privilege of watching Stayton vs. Grant Union, rivaling for the coveted 2A state title.
I was reminded of the energy of high school football games when I arrived. It's different from the NFL. Like college football, they play with their hearts and leave they're egos off the field. The stands are filled with parents who have put blood sweat and tears into getting them to this dreamed-of moment.
Whether teams win or loose the final game, I still see it as a phenomenal accomplishment to work as a team to get to this big day. Between the hundreds of hours of practice, the long bus rides, the mental prep on game day, and the game day team rituals, their efforts don't go unnoticed.
Today after Grant Union won the game, and after they finished high-fiving the other team, they came over and all at once in their low, booming voices yelled thank you to the exhuberant fans.
Here's to games played hard and the parents behind the scenes whose efforts also don't go unnoticed.
